An investigation into the contribution of the Scottish Winter Festivals in relation to civic pride levels of Edinburgh residents.

Purpose This paper investigates the contribution of the Scottish Winter Festivals in relation to civic pride levels shown in residents. The paper aims to understand how Edinburgh residents perceive the Festivals to determine whether the event generates a positive influence upon the social impacts in the region. Methodology The research was based upon a mixed methodological approach that involved qualitative interviews and quantitative questionnaires aimed at Edinburgh residents. As this paper did not rely upon economic justification, focussing solely on social impacts, it is able to present a clearer view on the social issues arising from the Scottish Winter Festivals as it is not distracted by the vast economic output of the event. Although, for this study the researcher deemed it appropriate to introduce the event's economic background to set the context for the paper. As the research involves both qualitative and quantitative data, the paper provides a more balanced consideration of the events. As the quantitative data involved questioning event attendees, it should be easily replicable as there were no prior criteria to taking part in the study other than being over sixteen and a current Edinburgh resident. Findings The research finds that although the Scottish Winter Festivals tend to be considered in a positive light, there is still work to be done before the events are considered suitable for their community as many residents deem the event to benefit visitors to the city more than themselves. While the paper was able to draw a number of conclusions, the researcher recommends that further research should be undertaken to identify whether the conclusions drawn were relevant to a wider population.ba_eveunpub2469_ethesesunpu
