Auto-Ethnography

This chapters explores the theoretical range and methodological scope of auto-ethnography, using the author's original research into boxing and the particular example of making a film about art and boxing. The main emphasis of the chapter is on ways of understanding the relationship between researchers and the field of the research and the intensities and expressiveness of auto-ethnography, especially in the context of psychosocial approaches and a re-working of the 'gaze' in which one is seen, seeing and making visible. Being in the field, where I am visible as an outsider and also invisible as part of the process of producing meanings, is contradictory and ambivalent, but very instructive
