Exploité par l'Humanité depuis l'Antiquité, le plomb offre de nombreuses qualités (faible coût, étanchéité, résistance aux sels marins, facilité de mise en forme, réutilisation), qui en ont fait l’un des métaux les plus largement utilisés dans la Marine, toutes époques confondues. Pourtant, ce matériau a fait l'objet de peu d’études scientifiques et historiques. Le premier objectif de ce travail était de dresser un inventaire exhaustif du plomb parmi les collections archéologiques issues de sites sous-marins du littoral français de la période moderne (XVIe – XIXe siècles).
