Lead artefacts boarded on wooden ships (XVIth – XIXth centuries) : focus on French coasts

Exploité par l'Humanité depuis l'Antiquité, le plomb offre de nombreuses qualités (faible coût, étanchéité, résistance aux sels marins, facilité de mise en forme, réutilisation), qui en ont fait l’un des métaux les plus largement utilisés dans la Marine, toutes époques confondues. Pourtant, ce matériau a fait l'objet de peu d’études scientifiques et historiques. Le premier objectif de ce travail était de dresser un inventaire exhaustif du plomb parmi les collections archéologiques issues de sites sous-marins du littoral français de la période moderne (XVIe – XIXe siècles). Cette démarche a permis de constituer une base de données riche de 569 enregistrements, constituant désormais un outil de référence inédit en France. Son exploitation a mis en lumière la pluralité des usages et des formes du plomb embarqué, ce que ne révèlent pas forcément les sources historiques. Mis en œuvre dans la quasi-totalité des activités des marins, s’intégrant à l’architecture du navire, embarqué comme matière première ou cargaison commerciale, le plomb est omniprésent dans les flottes militaires et civiles. L'ambition de ce travail est de montrer la richesse des données du plomb et l'importance économique et technique largement méconnues de ce matériau. Pour ce faire, il a fallu bâtir une approche pluridisciplinaire: constitution d'un glossaire, étude historique, technologique et archéologique, statistiques, analyses physico-chimiques et répartition spatiale. La réalisation de ce catalogue de référence et la proposition d'outils d’identification et d’interprétation pour ce mobilier devraient permettre de restituer toute sa place à ce métal si nécessaire aux marines anciennes.Exploited by mankind since the Antiquity, lead has many great qualities (low cost, sealing capabilities, resistance to sea salts and ease of malleability) that made it one of the most commonly used in the Navies until now. But this far, very little attention was drawn to this metal by historic or scientific studies. This research work provides a specific inventory amongst the artefacts found in submarine sites along France’s coasts, dating from the post medieval period (16th to 19th centuries). This work has revealed some priceless scientific and cultural heritage information. The 569 records corpus of artefacts represents an original reference tool in France. This research brought to light the plurality of shapes and uses of shipboard lead, data which was often omitted in historical documents. Used in most sailor’s activities, either in the ship structure itself or brought aboard as supply for raw material or commercial cargo purposes, lead is omnipresent in the military and civilian fleets. More broadly, this study intends to reveal the abundance of data from lead, as well as the economic and technical aspects, all previously unsuspected. Several research fields have been combined to create a multidisciplinary framework that allows the understanding of the importance of information coming from lead artefacts: compilation of a glossary, historical and technical approaches, archaeological and statistical studies combined with chemical and geographical analysis. This reference catalogue and the tools developed with it, should help to identify and interpret lead artefacts, which will lead the rehabilitation of this indispensable metal for the Navies around the world
