Malgré un antipsychologisme plusieurs fois réasserté, le philosophe américain Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914) maintient une dépendance ambiguë de la connaissance objective envers les états mentaux de la conscience. La thèse rend compte de ce paradoxe apparent en montrant que le projet peircien n'est pas logique mais épistémologique, et consiste en une étude critique de notre pouvoir de connaître.
