Une brève stimulation du Noyau Sous-thalamique (STN) dans la tranche des ganglions de la base induit une réponse polysynaptique de longue durée dans ses cibles : Substantia Nigra Pars reticulata (SNr), GP (Globus Pallidus). Cette réponse consiste en un courant NMDA suivi d'un barrage de courant excitateurs de type AMPA qui génère des bouffées de potentiels d'action. La même stimulation dans des branches provenant de souris déplétée en dopamine génère aussi des réponses complexes de plus longue durée. Leur seuil de déclenchement étant 2 à 3 fois plus faibles et ne peuvent dans certains cas se réverbérer.
