Les Bactéries sulfato-réductrices (BSR) représentent un groupe fonctionnel majeur dans les habitats aquatiques en intervenant dans les processus de minéralisation de la matière organique. En plus de leur implication dans le cycle du carbone et du soufre, les BSR sont considérées comme les principaux producteurs de méthylmercure en milieu côtier, un composé neurotoxique extrêmement bioaccumulable dans les réseaux trophiques.
