La détermination des marges de sécurité des structures de Génie Civil potentiellement sujettes à un risque sismique important nécessite l'amélioration des capacités prédictives des codes de calcul actuellement utilisés. Les phénomènes d'amortissement restent à ce jour l'une des principales sources d'incertitudes, aussi bien au niveau de la structure que des matériaux constitutifs. Pourtant, la résistance de cette dernière à un séisme est fortement conditionnée par sa capacité à stocker et à dissiper l'énergie mécanique introduite par le mouvement du sol.
