Hormis leur implication dans les fonctions de reproduction, de développement et du maintien des caractères mâles, les androgènes (principalement la testostérone et la dihydrotestostérone, DHT) sont des hormones stéroïdiennes capables d’influencer plusieurs structures et fonctions du système nerveux. En effet, durant le développement, les androgènes ont un effet masculinisant sur le système nerveux central (SNC) le rendant sexuellement dimorphique.
