Leur utilisation va de la messagerie instantanée au partage de fichiers, en passant par la sauvegarde et le stockage distribué ou encore le streaming video. Parmi les protocoles P2P, les protocoles basés sur le "gossip" sont une famille de protocoles qui a fait l'objet de nombreux travaux de recherche durant la dernière décennie.
