Biomphalaria glabrata est un mollusque d’eau douce, vivant en Amérique latine. Ce planorbe est principalement connu pour être l’hôte intermédiaire de Schistosoma mansoni, vers plat parasite responsable de la bilharziose intestinale, seconde endémie parasitaire humaine mondiale derrière le paludisme.Dans ce contexte, il apparaît clairement qu’une meilleure compréhension de l’interaction entre le parasite et le mollusque, hôte intermédiaire, représente une voie de recherche prometteuse.
