Aujourd'hui les structures multi-matériaux à base de bois sont en plein essor. Ces structures mixtes sont à la fois originales et mécaniquement prometteuses. En revanche, leur utilisation est encore récente. Cela se traduit par une certaine méconnaissance de leur comportement et notamment vis-à-vis de la présence des endommagements pouvant conduire à la dégradation de leurs propriétés mécaniques. Dans ce cadre, l'émission acoustique peut être une alternative pour l'inspection et le contrôle de ces structures.
