Looking for a palestinian citizenship, study of the palestinian arab elites in Jaffa and Haifa during the first half of the twentieth century

Les élites urbaines arabes palestiniennes de la première moitié du XX• siècle évoluent dans un contexte d'occupation plusieurs fois renouvelé : colonisation sioniste en toile de fond, avènement des Jeunes-Turcs, effondrement de l'Empire ottoman, puis instauration du mandat britannique. Premières terres d'accueil de ces nouveaux venus, poumons économiques et foyers intellectuels cosmopolites, les ports de Jaffa et Haffa sont Je théâtre d'intenses activités politiques et culturelles locales et nationales. À partir de sources essentiellement arabes palestiniennes et mêlant histoire et sociologie, la thèse présente les parcours de quelques membres des élites palestiniennes ayant rédigé et publié leurs mémoires, tels que 'isa al-'isa, propriétaire du journal Filas!an et 'homme d'affaires jaffien, Rasïd al;lâjj 'lbrâhîm, banquier résistant de Haïfa, ou Khayri 'Abú aI-Jabayn, jeune étudiant héritier d'une grande famille d'exportateurs d'oranges de Jaffa. A l'étude de ces mémoires écrites s'ajoutent celles d'un recueil de sources orales et d'archives de Filas an et al-Karmil, les deux grands journaux ímprimés respectivement à Jaffa et Haïfa durant la majeure partie de la période mandataire. Le croisement de ces différentes sources permet de reconstituer les territoires des élites urbaines côtières : scolaire et universitaire, de loisirs, économiques, culturels et politiques. Groupes sociaux multiformes aux « loyautés multiples» identifiées par Rashid Khalidi, ces élites alternent entre résistance ou coopération avec les divers occupants, alignement ou émancipation des réseaux nationaux de clientélisme dominés par les grandes familles jérusalémites. Leurs activités économiques et intellectuelles les amènent à formuler des projets de société dans l'espoir d'une hypothétique ü1dépendance nationale .. L'étude de leurs parcours. formations, réseaux de connaissances et activités professionnelles et intellectuelles, permet, en filigrane, de décrire les différentes formes de citoyennetés palestiniennes qui se dessinent aux yeux de ces élites, entre spécificité arabe et/ou palestinienne, et inspirations ottomane et européenne.The thesis is mainly based of Arab Palestinian sources, considered from a historical and socoloqícaí perspective. lt descríbes the paths taken by several members of the Palestinian elites, who wrote and published thetr Memories: 'Isa aí-Tsa who was both the owner of the newspaper Filas _!In and a businessman in Jaffa, Rasïd al-l;Jäjj 'roräntm. a banker and a resistant. in Haifa. or Khayrï 'Abü al-Jabayn, a young student who was the he.ir of a great family of orarqes-exporters in Jaffa Apart from those writtten Memories, this dissertation is based on the study of a collection ot oral sources and on the study of the archives of Filas .t:rn and al-KarmiJ; that were the two main newspapers, respectively printed in Jaffa and Haifa during much of the period of the British mandate in Palestine, The combination ot tnose different sauces allows the work of reconstructing the territories of the urban and coastal elites: the scholar and university territories. the leisure iermores, the ,economical territories, tt1e cultural and political territories, Those elites are multifaceted social groups, fitted with « muitipJekJyal.ûes )> (to use Rashid Khalidi's words). They alternate resistance and accomoeaton towards the different occupiers, obedience of emancipation towards the national networks of patronage controlled try the great families from Jerusalem. Through their economical and intellectual activities, the eines formulate society projects. in the hopes of a nypothecal national independence. While considering their careers, training and background, sociability networks, professional and intellectual activities, we can .implicitely describe the different forms of a Palestinian citizenships present in their mind : for the emes are influenced ln that matter by both their Arab and/or Palestinianidentity and the Ottoman or European models
