La stimulation électrique fonctionnelle (FES) est présente depuis des décennies dans les centres de rééducation. Le principe de cette technique est de créer une dépolarisation de la membrane (potentiel d’action) des cellules excitables (axones ou myocytes) entrainant une contraction musculaire. Employée dans la plupart des cas pour le renforcement musculaire et la prévention des atrophies musculaires faisant suite à une lésion de la moelle épinière, la FES peut également être utilisée pour diminuer la spasticité et restaurer des mouvements des membres.
