La théorie des vecteurs harmoniques a mis en évidence l’asymétrie des progressions harmoniques comme l’une des caractéristiques saillantes du langage harmonique tonal. Cette étude fournit des éléments d’explication à ce phénomène en déterminant d’un point de vue théorique et empirique l'évolution des rapports entre les contraintes contrapuntiques – notamment le traitement des dissonances – et l’asymétrie des progressions. La lecture des traités allemands de la période 1548-1745 cerne le phénomène de la dissonance dans sa dimension technique et rhétorique, établit des liens avec les théories de la cadence et de la triade, et aborde les principes sémiologiques, cognitifs, esthétiques et philosophiques qui sous-tendent l'origine de l'asymétrie...
