Après un accident nucléaire tel que Fukushima en 2011, le césium 137 radioactif est transporté de l’atmosphère vers le sol par l’eau de pluie. Les argiles sont des espèces minérales finement divisées (1-100 µm) naturellement présentes dans les sols qui sont connues pour leurs propriétés adsorbantes sélectives et irréversibles vis-à-vis des ions Cs.
