Le théâtre de l’opprimé : matrice symbolique de l’espace public

Invented by Augusto Boal in the 1970s in Latin America, the Theatre of the Oppressed aims to combine art with a collective reflection work on group and society, encouraging participation and involvement. This particular form of theatre suggests that its action may have repercussions in the real. Without trying to deduce the conditions of its effectiveness, the analysis seeks to understand what people who practice Theatre of the Oppressed are trying to implement when they use it, taking into account the socio-cultural context in which this implementation is embedded.Using an historical and comparative approach, a study of three localized processes is presented : the creation process in Latin America through the experience of Augusto Boal, in France through various Theatre of the Oppressed groups, in West Bengal, India, around the teams and committees that constitute the Jana Sanskriti movement. From these three examples, the use of such a practice in different spaces and different sociocultural contexts is questioned, in order to analyse both disparate and similar characters present in the Theatre of the Oppressed through the practice of forum theatre. We conclude with the idea that there is an intentionality common to different practitioners. This common intentionality can be observed from three perspectives : from the level of the general content of the practice, from the scale of the relationships that are created, and from looking at the bet that is made, on the ability of this performative practice to produce a subjectivation process among participants.Inventé par Augusto Boal dans les années 1970 en Amérique latine, le théâtre de l’opprimé a pour objectif de conjuguer l’expression artistique avec un travail de réflexion collective sur le groupe et la société, en encourageant la participation et l’implication. Cette forme particulière de théâtre laisse entendre que son action peut avoir des répercussions dans le réel. Sans chercher à déduire les conditions de son efficacité, l’analyse vise à comprendre ce que les personnes qui pratiquent le théâtre de l’opprimé cherchent à mettre en forme lorsqu’ils l’utilisent en prenant en compte le contexte socioculturel dans lequel cette mise en oeuvre s’inscrit.À partir d’une approche historique et comparative, la thèse présente l’étude de trois processus localisés : lors de la création en Amérique latine à travers les expériences d’Augusto Boal ; en France par le biais de différents groupes de théâtre de l’opprimé ; en Inde, au Bengale-Occidental, en s’intéressant aux équipes et aux comités qui constituent le mouvement du Jana Sanskriti.Partant de ces trois exemples, la thèse interroge l’utilisation d’une telle pratique dans des espaces et des contextes socioculturels dissemblables afin d’analyser tant les caractères disparates que les invariants présents dans le théâtre de l’opprimé à travers la pratique du théâtre forum. Elle conclut sur l’idée qu’il existe une intentionnalité commune aux différents praticiens qui est observable à partir de trois versants : au niveau du contenu général de lapratique, à l’échelle des relations mises en place et enfin, dans le pari qui est fait sur la capacité de cette pratique performative à promouvoir un processus de subjectivation chez les participants
