Circadian rhythm of activity during the annual phases in the European quail, Coturnix coturnix

This study aimed at determining how variations in the circadian rhythm of feeding during the annual cycle took endogenous rhythmic characteristics into account. The birds (n = 8) were maintained under constant dim light from the age of 1 to 9 months. Feeding activity was recorded using infra-red detectors. The birds expressed all the phases, except migration. Activity was arrhythmic when they were moulting. A circadian rhythm of feeding activity appeared during the fattening phase. In males, the circadian period lengthened and the clarity of the rhythm increased during sexual development. These results appear to confirm the effects of physiological state on the temporal organisation of activity. Variations of the circadian rhythm could influence the ability to synchronise with exogenous cycles such as the alternation of day and night.Les oiseaux migrateurs présentent un cycle annuel avec différentes phases : mue, engraissement, migration, reproduction. Cette étude a pour but de déterminer les variations du rythme circadien d’activité alimentaire au cours de ces phases chez la caille des blés. Pour cela, des oiseaux (n = 8) furent maintenus en lumière constante tamisée de l’âge de 1 à 9 mois. L’activité alimentaire était enregistrée à l’aide de détecteurs infrarouges. Les oiseaux ont exprimé toutes les phases du cycle, exceptée la migration. Durant la mue, l’activité était arythmique. Un rythme circadien d’alimentation est apparu avec l’accumulation lipidique. Chez les mâles, le développement sexuel est lié à un allongement de la période et une augmentation de la netteté du rythme endogène. Ces résultats confirment les effets de l’état physiologique sur l’organisation temporelle. Les variations de l’activité circadienne pourraient avoir des conséquences sur la capacité de synchronisation à des cycles exogènes, tel que l’alternance jour nuit
