International audienceIn this text, associated with my opening lecture at the first INDRUM Conference, I will reflect on the achievements and challenges of mathematics education research at university level, in the light of my experience both as a researcher and a university teacher. First, I will come back to the historical evolution of this field of research through the retrospective analysis of some selected episodes of my personal trajectory. I will then consider the current state of the field, presenting my vision of its strengths and weaknesses, of the challenges it faces and the resources existing to take them up.</p
