La question de l'accès à l'eau potable reste une préoccupation majeure de tous les habitants de la Grande Comore. Dans cette île volcanique de 1025 km2, les ressources en eau proviennent d'une part des eaux météorites liées aux pluies, qui sont recueillies dans des citernes par les toits des maisons, et d'autre part des eaux souterraines résultant de l'infiltration des précipitations facilitées par la porosité des roches. Il n'existe aucun cours d'eau permanent, mais une nappe d'eau évaluée annuellement à 1 milliard de m3 entoure toute la zone côtière.
