L'organisation des substances humiques à l'échelle moléculaire reste une question largement débattue, et à ce jour, il n'a pas été possible de trancher entre une structure polymérique en pelotte plus ou moins flexible et un assemblage supramoléculaire de molecules hétérogènes associées par des liaisons hydrogènes et des interactions hydrophobes.
