Grâce à l'analyse des carottages, on peut remonter l'histoire du climat terrestre sur plusieurs centaines de milliers d'années. Grâce à l'étude de sa topographie, on peut remonter à la variabilité de son climat, connaître sa dynamique : écoulement de la glace, vêlages d'icebergs. . .
