Une forte contamination radioactive du milieu marin, notamment par le 137Cs, s'est produite dans le Pacifique nord-ouest suite à l'accident nucléaire de Fukushima Dai-ichi survenu le 11 mars 2011. Deux sources majeures ont été à l'origine de cette contamination, les retombées atmosphériques (sèches et humides) et les rejets liquides directement en mer. Cette radioactivité a été transférée aux organismes marins conduisant à la contamination de plusieurs espèces pélagiques et benthiques.
