Les algues brunes sont des organismes photosynthétiques multicellulaires, appartenant à la lignée des straménopiles, et dont l'habitat principal est la zone intertidale. Une de leurs caractéristiques métaboliques est d'utiliser le mannitol (polyalcool à six atomes de carbone) comme forme de stockage du carbone issu de la photosynthèse. Le métabolisme du mannitol chez ces organismes fait intervenir quatre enzymes, deux pour la synthèse et deux pour le recyclage, regroupées dans le cycle du mannitol.
