Le parapluie de Ponce Pilate, ou la valorisation de l’externalité en matière d’explication des comportements distributifs de sanctions (Locus of Distribution)

International audienceOne knows for a long time that the reinforcements received are more often assigned to internal reasons than to external ones. This was first considered like a bias, then like a norm. This norm of internality, initially only applied to the explanation of the reinforcements, was then generalized to the explanation of the behaviors. There would be a global norm of internality, that one can define as the internal explanation valorization, as well for the reinforcements gotten as for the adopted behaviors. The validity of this norm has, in its reinforcements side, been already put into question, with a proposition of substitution in terms of allegiance norm. We want to show here that this norm of allegiance is also valid as regards to the explanation of the behaviors. And to demonstrate it, we were located in the field of the reinforcements distributed by the teachers to their students. Our experimental procedures permitted us to verify 1) that when they punish their students, the teachers declare these last only persons responsible of these sanctions ; that is to say that the teachers consider their students interns concerning reinforcements received, confessing by this fact that themselves, teachers, are external as regards to the behaviors that they adopt while congratulating or while blaming their students, 2) that such assignments, therefore assignments contradictory of the viewpoint of the norm of internality, are valorized by the students, and that this valorization is known of the teachers. Such results seem to confirm our hypothesis of valorization of the external explanations concerning distributive behaviors of sanctions.On sait depuis longtemps que les renforcements reçus sont davantage attribués à des causes internes qu’externes. Cela fut d’abord considéré comme une erreur, puis comme une norme. Cette norme d’internalité, initialement appliquée de façon limitative à l’explication des renforcements, fut ensuite généralisée à l’explication des comportements. Il y aurait ainsi une norme globale d’internalité, que l’on peut définir comme la valorisation des explications internes, tant des renforcements obtenus que des comportements adoptés. La validité de cette norme a, en son versant renforcements, déjà été mise en cause avec notamment une proposition de substitution en termes de norme d'allégeance. Nous voulons montrer ici que cette norme d'allégeance est également valide sur le plan de l'explication des comportements. Et pour le démontrer, nous nous sommes situés dans le champ des renforcements distribués par les enseignants à leurs étudiants. Nos procédures expérimentales nous ont alors permis de vérifier 1) que lorsqu’ils sanctionnent leurs étudiants, les enseignants déclarent ces derniers seuls responsables de ces sanctions ; c’est-à-dire que les enseignants considèrent leurs étudiants internes en matière de renforcements reçus, avouant de ce fait qu’eux-mêmes, enseignants, sont externes sur le plan des comportements qu’ils adoptent en félicitant ou en blâmant leurs étudiants, 2) que de telles attributions, donc attributions contradictoires du point de vue de la norme d’internalité, sont valorisées par les étudiants, et que cette valorisation est connue des enseignants. De tels résultats semblent donc confirmer notre hypothèse de valorisation des explications externes en matière de comportements distributifs de sanctions
