Three criteria traditionally characterize a verb: the structure in which it appears (syntactic construction and valence), its semantic-aspectual properties (state, activity...) and the lexical field to which it belongs (verb of speech, perception...). However, French verbs are, for the most part, polysemic. Their semantic and syntactic properties are thus likely to vary according to the context to the point of causing, in certain cases, a change of lexical class.
