Une interface cerveau-ordinateur permet d'interagir avec un système, comme un système d'écriture, uniquement par l'activité cérébrale. Un des phénomènes neurophysiologiques permettant cette interaction est le potentiel évoqué cognitif P300, lequel correspond à une modification du signal 300 ms après la présentation d'une information attendue. Cette petite réaction cérébrale est difficile à observer par électroencéphalographie car le signal est bruité.
