Nowadays, antibacterial resistance represents an important public health issue worldwide. It is a real threat to the health of humans and animals alike. There is an urgent need to reduce the use of antibiotics in order to tackle the spread of resistance genes and therefore solutions to replace them should be investigated. Pharmaceutical companies and their research laboratories are already working on the development of alternatives to antibiotics for their three main use: as growth factors, in the prevention, and in the treatment of bacterial diseases.
