Domestic and Urban Water System in Nancy in the 19th Century : an Essay in Historical Geography

Cette thèse en géographie historique s'articule autour de quatre axes qui résument le parcours de l'eau dans Nancy au XIX° siècle, en bref, de la source à l'égout. Une fois définies les notions d'hydrosystème urbain, de géographie historique, de domesticité de l'eau, l'étude de ce linéaire aborde successivement quatre chapitres, qui sont autant de bornes jalonnant les différents objets abordés. Successivement sont étudiées les sources et les bouges ; les conduites principales et les bassines ; les conduites secondaires, les fontaines, les lavoirs et bains ; l'évacutation et la gestion des eaux non utilisées et usées. Ces objets forment des unités cohérentes distinctes qui interagissent entre-elles, et montrent des coutures parfois perméables, toujours perceptibles dans le paysage urbain actuel. L'eau à Nancy au XIX° siècle est un enjeu majeur. Les changements traversés sont multiples. D'une alimentation en eau souterraine (les sources), Nancy double très efficacement sa ressource par une alimentation en eau de surface (la Moselle). Le réseau d'adduction est amélioré par l'adoption progressive de la fonte. Le chemin de fer, le canal sont également des obstacles physiques à une alimentation pérenne. Enfin, la très forte hausse démographique réalisée après 1870 entraine une hausse importante de la demande. Nancy doit trouver rapidement des solutions efficaces. Le suivi du linéaire hydrique permet de mesurer les différents enjeux de l'hydrosystème domestique à Nancy à cette époque. Il permet également d'appréhender ses utilisations diverses. Un important travail en archives, confronté au terrain, a permis la réalisation de cette thèse.This thesis in historical geography explores four main issues, showing the movement of water in Nancy in the 19th century, from the well to the sewers. After defining the notions of urban water system, historical geography and domestic water use, the study moves on to these four chapters: wells and collectors; primary water mains and "bowls" (which share water between secondary water mains); secondary water mains, fountains, wash-houses and public baths; disposal and management of used and unused water. These constitute self-contained, discrete entities, but they also interact, and some of these connections are still visible in the current urban landscape. Water was a major concern for Nancy in the 19th century. Numerous changes occurred during that period. Initially exclusively dependent on underground water resources (wells), Nancy managed to double its resources through the use of surface water (the river Moselle). The gradual adoption of cast iron also contributed to the improvement of the conveyance network, while the railway and the canal introduced physical obstacles to the perennial water supply of the town. Additionally, the sharp increase in population after 1870 led to a much greater demand, for which Nancy had to find efficient solutions. Following the movement of water allows this study to determine the main issues raised by the domestic water system of Nancy at that time, and to apprehend the various uses of that system.
