Nuclear motion in molecules and the formation of chemical bonds have been detected by the femtosecond (10-15 s) pump-probe spectroscopy. However, the resolution offered by femtosecond pulse is insufficient to track the dynamics of electronic motion (10-18 s) in atoms and molecules.
