Entrepreneurship: The influence of family entrepreneurs on students’ motivations and entrepreneurial potential

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Psicologia apresentada à Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da EducaçãoA presente investigação tem como principal objetivo avaliar em quemedida a existência de empresários no contexto familiar do estudante afeta as suas motivações para empreender e o seu potencial empreendedor. Neste sentido, pretende-se também compreender se a vontade de ser trabalhador autónomo, a perceção da capacidade de criação de uma empresa, a ideia de negócio e a implementação da mesma são influenciadas pelo facto dos estudantes terem familiares empresários.A amostra em estudo foi constituída por 966 estudantes de diversas instituições de ensino superior (politécnico e universitário) que responderam a um questionário intitulado “Motivações Empreendedoras dos Estudantes” desenvolvido por Parreira, Pereira e Brito (2011) no âmbito do projeto Poliempreende/Poli Entrepreneurship Innovation Network.Na análise dos dados foi gerada uma matriz de intercorrelações entre a Escala das Motivações Pessoais e Fatores Facilitadores do Empreendedorismo e o Carland Entrepreneurship Index, revelando uma relação considerada moderada entre as duas escalas. Posteriormente, os dados foram submetidos a testes de Qui-quadrado para duas amostras independentes, constatando-se que são os estudantes que têm empresários na família que mais gostariam de ser trabalhadores por conta própria, se sentem mais capazes de criar a sua empresa, têm mais de ideias de negócio e tendem mais a implementá-las. Para além deste procedimento, os dados foram submetidos a uma análise multivariada da variância, verificando-se que o facto de os estudantes terem empresários na família se reverte em diferenças significativas nas Motivações de Realização Familiar e Societal e que estes estudantes apresentam um índice de potencial empreendedor mais elevado nos fatores Judging Perceiving e Thinking Feeling do que os que não têm. Por fim, o modelo global testado revelou que o efeito direto de ter empresários na família no potencial empreendedor é baixo, embora seja estatisticamente significativo, o mesmo não ocorrendo nas Motivações de Realização Familiar e Societal.Embora já existam alguns estudos neste domínio, a presente investigação destaca-se por avaliar a influência da família nas motivações e no potencial empreendedor dos estudantes num período pós-crise económica. Com efeito, esta contribui para uma visão mais global do processo de empreender, enfatizando que a família ainda detém um papel significativo no desenvolvimento do potencial empreendedor e, em parte, nas motivações empreendedoras dos seus descendentes. No entanto, existem também outros stakeholders envolvidos neste processo que poderão ter um papel mais importante, como por exemplo, a academia. Serão ainda discutidas algumas propostas para investigações futuras.The goal of this study is to evaluate the extent to which the existence ofentrepreneurs in the familial context of the student affects their motivations and their entrepreneurial potential. The intention is also to understand if the will to be self-employed, the perception of the capacity to create a company, the business idea and the implementation of the same are influenced by the fact that the students have family businessmen.The sample contains 966 students from several higher education institutions (Universities and Polytechnic Higher Education) who answered a questionnaire entitled "Student ́s Entrepreneurial Motivations" developed by Parreira, Pereira and Brito (2011) within the scope of the project Poli Entrepreneurship Innovation Network.In order to analyze the data, we created an intercorrelation matrix between the Scale of Personal Motivations and Entrepreneurship Facilitating Factors and the Carland Entrepreneurship Index that revealed a moderate relationship. After that, the results of this research were presented in accordance with Chi-square tests for two independent samples, and it was concluded that the students who have entrepreneurs in the family are the ones most likely to be self-employed, feel more capable of creating their company, have more business ideas and implement them. In addition, the data was analyzed through a multivariate analysis of the variance and it was verified the fact that having entrepreneurs in the family only reverts to differences in Factor 1: Motivations of Family and Societal Achievement and that students with entrepreneurs in the family have a higher rate of entrepreneurial potential in the Judging Perceiving and Thinking Feeling factors than those who don ́t. Finally, the global model tested showed that the direct effect of having entrepreneurs in the family on the entrepreneurial potential is low, although it ́s statistically significant, not being the case in Family and Societal Realization Motivations. Although literature in this field already exists, our research stands out by evaluating the influence of the family on the motivations and entrepreneurial potential of students in a post-economic crisis. In fact, it contributes to the understanding that the family still has a significant role in the development of entrepreneurial potential and, in part, of the entrepreneurial motivations of the descendants. However, there are also other stakeholders involved in this process who may have a more important role, such as for example, entrepreneurship education in higher education institutions. In this way, some proposals for future research will be discussed
