Wounds of War in the Portuguese Middle Age - Violence, sufferance and medical care in the battlefields.

Dissertação de Mestrado em História Militar apresentada à Faculdade de LetrasThe aim of this work is to show that, contrarily to what might be thought, there was medical care in the battlefields during the Middle Age, a topic which has not been tackled by any Portuguese historic work yet. The time span considered in this work is the Portuguese Middle Age, beginning with the establishment of Portugal as a nation and ending in 1449, when the battle of Alfarrobeira took place (this is usually considered as the end of the Middle Age in Portugal). The information presented in this work relies in: i) archaeological sources from the battle of Aljubarrota, the most important pitched battle ever fought in Portugal and one of the rare major battles in Europe which had its human spoils studied by osteology experts; ii) Portuguese medieval chronicles, which are some of the few written works in this matter, and which contain credible information, allowing to validate the thesis of this work.For a better understanding of the context of this topic, both the medical practice and the weapons of the medieval time were studied. As for the medieval medical theories of the time, they were based in the theory of the four humours of Hippocratic medicine, which is directly linked with the theory of the four elements of the Universe, systemized by Empedocles of Agrigento. The medical formation in the medieval Portugal was also studied, in particular the university education after the Estudo Geral (founded in 1291) and the policies for regulation of the medical profession. This was the framework for the study of the Portuguese medieval chronicles, which is the most significant and important part of this dissertation. Other studies regarding topics related to the main subject of this dissertation were also taken into account.Com o presente trabalho procura-se demonstrar que, contrariamente ao que por vezes se pensa, existiam cuidados médicos nos campos de batalha da Idade Média. Esse é o foco desta dissertação, que aborda um tema até agora não tratado pela historiografia portuguesa. O período temporal considerado é a época medieval, desde os primórdios da nacionalidade até 1449, data da batalha de Alfarrobeira, que de algum modo podemos considerar como o fim da Idade Média portuguesa. A base de trabalho assenta, por um lado, em fontes arqueológicas relativas à batalha de Aljubarrota, a mais importante batalha campal travada em solo português e uma das raras grandes batalhas que, na Europa, teve os seus despojos humanos estudados do ponto de vista osteológico. Por outro, baseia-se nas obras produzidas pelos cronistas medievais portugueses; são fontes de uma enorme riqueza, que compensam a avareza das fontes documentais nesta matéria e das quais foi possível extrair informações credíveis que permitem validar a tese que se propõe demonstrar.Para melhor entendimento e contextualização do tema, procurou-se garantir um enquadramento correcto. Assim, foi estudado o pensamento médico medieval, que foi beber os seus princípios básicos na teoria dos quatro humores de Hipócrates, que mimetiza a teoria dos quatro elementos constituintes do universo anteriormente proposta por Empédocles de Agrigento. Estudou-se também a formação médica medieval em Portugal, em especial a formação universitária depois da fundação do Estudo Geral, em 1291, assim como a forma como o poder político procurou regular o exercício da profissão. As armas utilizadas na guerra medieval foram igualmente objecto de estudo. Com esta contextualização, avançou-se na análise das crónicas e é precisamente esse estudo que representa a parte mais significativa e importante desta dissertação; para a sua elaboração foram também utilizados estudos diversos, que abordam assuntos relacionados com o tema central que aqui se pretende debater
