Efl students’ perceptions towards the use of podcast in listening class at IAIN Palangka Raya

This study relates to the students’ perceptions towards the use of podcast in listening class and the problems of students towards the use of podcast in listening, which is used to collect information about the opinion and problems of the students of English education study program about the use of podcast in listening class. The purpose of this study is to describe the students’ perceptions towards the use of podcast in listening and their problems toward this. The research type was survey study in quantitative research method. Data from this research are collected from the questionnaire and interview. The subjects of this research were learners from 3rd and 5th semester English Education Study Program focused on Interpretive Listening and Extensive Listening. Questionnaires were distributed to 115 students in listening class and interview data were obtained from 10 students’ representatives who were samples. The result of this the researcher found that: (1) 102 (88.67%) students have an enjoyment in using podcast in listening class, because podcast is easy to use. Students agreed that podcast could help them in learning listening and they have willingness in using podcast as an alternative way to learn listening. And podcast also motivated them because it engaged their interest. The content of the podcast and clear native pronunciation derived from podcast could hone their skills especially listening and speaking skill. Besides, most of the students also agreed that podcast was easy to get since there are many podcasting websites available on the internet. (2) the problem that the students encountered in using podcast was the length of podcast too long for them. Because of that, 96 (83.47%) students might feel bored and lose focus when listening to podcast. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini berhubungan dengan pendapat mahasiswa dalam penggunaan podcast di kelas listening dan masalah yang dihadapi mahasiswa dalam penggunaan podcast di kelas listening, yang digunakan untuk mengumpulakn informasi tentang pendapat dan masalah mahasiswa program study pendidikan bahasa inggris mengenai penggunaan podcast di kelas listening. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pendapat mahasiswa dalam penggunaan podcast di kelas listening dan masalah yang dihadapi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode survai dengan pendekatan kuantitatif. Data dari penelitian ini didapat dari angket dan wawancara. Subjek pada penelitian ini mahasiswa dari semester 3 (tiga) dan 5 (lima) program studi pendidkan bahasa Inggris fokus pada kelas Interpretive Listening dan Extensive Listening. Angket di bagikan kepada 115 mahasiswa di kelas listening dan data interview diperoleh dari 10 perwakilan mahasiswa yang menjadi sampel. Hasil penelitian mengatakan bahwa: (1) 105 (88.67%) mahasiswa merasa nyaman dalam menggunakan podcast di kelas listening, karena podcast mudah digunakan. Mahasiswa setuju bahwa podcast dapat membantu mereka dalam belajar listening dan mereka memiliki kemauan dalam menggunakan podcast sebagai cara alternatif untuk belajar listening. Dan podcast juga memotivasi mereka karena menarik minat mereka. Konten podcast dan pelafalan asli yang jelas yang berasal dari podcast dapat mengasah keterampilan mereka terutama keterampilan mendengarkan dan berbicara. Selain itu, sebagian besar mahasiswa juga setuju bahwa podcast mudah didapat karena ada banyak situs web Podcasting yang tersedia di internet. (2) masalah yang dihadapi para mahasiswa dalam menggunakan podcast adalah panjangnya podcast yang terlalu lama bagi mereka. Karena itu, 96 (83.47%) mahasiswa mungkin merasa bosan dan kehilangan fokus ketika mendengarkan podcast yang terlalu lama
