Forty-three years ago, after the detonation of three atomic bombs in 1945, the public became aware of atomic energy and the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project was the code name used by the Army Corps of Engineers for the development of atomic weapons and the procurement of the necessary raw materials, during World War II. The project was carried out under the direction of the Corps' Manhattan Engineer District (MED). The MED was established in August 1942. The name was taken from District Engineer, Colonel John C.
