Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States contributing to over 600,000 deaths each year. Native Americans are at greater risk for heart disease, with higher mortality rates related to this disease than other population. The prevalence of coronary artery disease in Native Americans is 11.6 %, compared to 6.5% for African Americans, 6.1% for Hispanics 6.1%, and 5.8% for Whites (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2011).
