Among these changes, now familiar to all of us, are higher data rates, shrinking budgets, and to some extent this nation’s relations with foreign governments. This paper strobes the STDN in a period of rapid evolution. This evolution embraces automation, consolidation, and the development of a space borne data relay network to replace terrestial stations.
