This paper explores the value of ethnic studies courses and courses that emphasize diversity in their curriculum and pedagogical practices. Existing research regarding the worth of these courses are supplemented by narratives that have been acquired through interviewing students who have completed either courses offered by the Mexican American Studies program at Tucson Magnet High School or courses offered by the University of Arizona that fulfill the Diversity Emphasis requirement. Ethnic studies and courses that have a similar focus on people of color as producers of knowledge have been found to be effective tools in engaging with "at-risk" students and increasing attendance rates.
