Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex health condition that impacts multiple organ systems and contributes to both acute and chronic health problems. In the United States (U.S.), T2DM is a growing health concern with increasing prevalence among both adult and pediatric populations (American Diabetes Association [ADA], 2015; Dea, 2011). Developing a comprehensive plan of care that incorporates a multifaceted treatment and prevention plan is necessary to address this growing health concern and reduce overall morbidity and mortality.
