The metabolic syndrome is a multifaceted condition characterized by a clustering of metabolic and cardiovascular abnormalities, including insulin resistance in skeletal muscle, adipose tissue and liver, visceral adiposity, hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance, dyslipidemia, and essential hypertension.
