Alteration of rock by water is observed in all levels of the Apache Leap Tuff, Superior, Arizona. Possible alteration conditions range from hydrothermal circulation after eruption of the tuff to percolation of low temperature modern water. This study uses stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen in matrix phenocrysts and whole rocks to determine temperature and timing of alteration, and the extent of water-rock interaction at progressive distances from fractures. Data indicate low temperatures (20 to 30°C) of water-rock interaction. Water/rock ratios increase stratigraphically upward.
