Energy management strategy in Hybrid Electric Vehicles can be improved by applying optimal control ideas based on Pontryagin’s Minimum Principle (PMP). The control idea is able to implement an instantaneous optimization concept into the control system, so that it is possible to be utilized in a forward-looking control system. The control concept, however, does not guarantee the optimality because the principle only provides necessary conditions for the optimal control problems. In this brief, the vehicle system is investigated, in order to find out sufficient conditions from the principle. There have been several studies that proved the optimality, and the primary concepts are reviewed and summarized in this brief
