Power Relations Inherent in the Culture of School Sport Teams and it’s Policy Alternatives

The purpose of this article is to understand power relation and structure inherent in the culture of school sport teams in terms of a sociocultural perspective. This analysis of the power relation inherent in the culture of school sport clubs provide an insight to understanding the power structure and relations between coaches, student-athletes and their parents and then to seeking policy alternatives regarding unequal power relations among them. For this study, a single case study approach based on a qualitative methodology was adopted focusing on the sport of basketball. The paper identified: first, the culture of school sport is a double-edged sword: 'admiration' and 'hardship'; second, it identified unbalanced power relations in the context of school sport culture; and third, there is a key that makes student-athletes study. Policy alternatives are as follows: First, we should utilize ode to school sport teams in order to improve their image; second, we should consider an inherent socio-cultural change in South Korea to root balanced the power relation and the horizontal social relation among them in the culture of school sport clubs; and third, we should provide security for student-athletes' right for learning (study)
