This thesis is submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Philosphiae Doctor (PhD) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The thesis is divided into three parts, each of which addresses a specific topic within state and parameter estimation for nonlinear and uncertain systems. Part I of the thesis is concerned with state and parameter estimation for automotive vehicles. The main focus is on estimation of the angle between the orientation of the vehicle and its direction of travel, known as the vehicle sideslip angle.
