Der postischämische Reperfusionsschaden stellt ein bedeutendes Problem in der klinischen Medizin dar. Er kann im schlimmsten Fall über ein Multiorganversagen zum Tod führen. Folgerichtig sind bereits erhebliche wissenschaftliche Anstrengungen unternommen worden, Wege zu einer Minderung des Reperfusionsschadens zu finden.
