Bei der Induktion, Aufrechterhaltung und Auflösung der Leberfibrose spielen neben direkten zellulären Interaktionen die Wechselwirkungen zwischen den verschiedenen Leberzellen und der extrazellulären Matrix (EZM) eine zentrale Rolle. Dabei wirken EZM-Bestandteile, wie z.B. die Kollagene, nicht nur direkt auf die Zellen, sondern modulieren deren Aktivität auch indirekt durch die Speicherung von anderen Molekülen, wie z.B. Wachstumsfaktoren (Crinopexy). Neben Wachstumsfaktoren wurde auch für verschiedene Matrixmetalloproteinasen (MMPs), welche wesentlich am physiologischen und pathologischen Umbau der EZM beteiligt und therapeutisch von großem Interesse sind, eine Speicherung in der EZM hypothetisiert.
