HMG-CoA-Reduktasehemmer spielen eine entscheidende Rolle in der kardiovaskulären Primär- und Sekundärprävention. Neben der Senkung des LDL- Cholesterols ist der positive Effekt der Therapie mit HMG-CoA-Reduktasehemmern auf steroidunabhängige Faktoren, insbesondere auf die verminderte Bildung von Isoprenoiden, zurückzuführen. Hierdurch lassen sich zahlreiche protektive, direkte vaskuläre Effekte, unter anderem auf glatte Gefäßmuskelzellen begründen, die zu einer Verminderung der Migration und Proliferation dieser Zellen in der Gefäßintima und zu einer erhöhten Plaquestabilität beitragen.
