Sie wird durch auf RNA basierenden, makromolekularen "Maschinen" bewerkstelligt, den Ribosomen. Die Translation wird durch sog. Translationsfaktoren initiiert und kontrolliert. Bei Eukaryonten beinhaltet der Standardmechanismus der Translationsinitiation die Bindung eines ribosomalen Initiationskomplex an die 5'-Capstruktur der mRNA sowie einen Scanning-Mechanismus, bei dem sich der ribosomale Initiationskomplex entlang der mRNA zum ersten Startkodon bewegt.
