In this thesis we create nanotube-chromophore energy transfer systems and characterize them optically. The nanotube-chromophore complexes are devised through the incorporation of a chromophoric perylene derived unit into the surfactant. The functional perylene unit pi-pi stacks on the nanotube wall. This close proximity results in a Förster resonance energy transfer at a distance much smaller than the Förster radius from the dye into the tube, yielding transfer efficiencies of almost unity. The energy transfer is mediated by a dipole-dipole interaction which does not alter the nanotube’s intrinsic optoelectronic properties, but opens an additional channel for the excitation of the nanotube in the absorption band of the chromophore.
