Natriuretic Peptides (NP) are a family of hormones secreted by the heart in response to cardiac dilatation. Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP) and Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) together regulate arterial blood pressure and myocardial function via specific receptors (NPR-A and NPR-C). My work shows that in addition to their well-established cardiovascular effects, Natriuretic Peptides are a novel class of hormones that act as potent regulators of energy metabolism. Natriuretic Peptides activate adipose tissue lipolysis using an alternative signalling pathway compared to catecholamines providing the body with fatty acids as an energy source.
