Biomolecular processes often involve ions in aqueous solutions. Accurate force-field parameters are thus required for these ions, if we are to use molecular simulations to investigate the roles they play. In the course of this PhD study, we addressed multiple outstanding issues concerning the development of force fields for ions in aqueous solution. We optimized parameters for monoatomic ions for the TIP5P water model, and show that the activity derivative is often not sufficient to optimize ion-ion interactions, since it reaches a plateau near the experimental target value.
