Die Spezies des L. donovani-Komplex sind Auslöser viszeraler aber auch kutaner Leishmaniosen. Die Taxonomie beruht bisher auf der Isoenzymanalyse, deren Ergebnisse jedoch durch genotypische Analysen, wie das multilocus microsatellite typing (MLMT), in Frage gestellt werden. Der Vorteil des MLMT liegt in der schnellen hochauflösenden Diagnostik und Diskriminierung der einzelnen Subspezies und Stämme. In dieser Arbeit wurden hauptsächlich Leishmanienisolate aus Indien und Afrika, die anhand ihrer Isoenzymmuster den Arten L. donovani, L. infantum und L. archibaldi zugeordnet worden waren, anhand von 15 Mikrosatellitenmarkern auf ihre genetische Variabilität hin untersucht.
